NONRESIDENT CUSTOMER REPRESENTATIVE

                                            TYPE AND CLASSES:                                              

  • 9-40 Customer Representative

Florida Statutes 626.741 (1) (b) defines a “CUSTOMER REPRESENTATIVE” as a salaried employee of the general lines (property and casualty) agent or agency.  The customer representative transacts insurance under the supervision of a licensed and appointed resident general lines agent of Florida.   

Application Qualifications:

  • Complete an online application for License and submit appropriate fees.   Apply for license

  • Be a natural person at least 18 years of age.

  • Be a resident of another state sharing a common boundary with this state (Georgia or Alabama) and has been employed in this state for a period of not less than six months.

  • Be a United States citizen or legal alien who possesses a work authorization from the United States Immigration and Naturalization Services.

  • Be fingerprinted on cards provided by the Florida Department of Financial Services.  Two fingerprint cards are mailed to the applicant.

State Examination Qualifications (Must be completed within the last two years):

  • Successfully completed a 100 hour classroom course in all lines of insurance except life and annuities  (Dice Link); or

  • Successfully completed a correspondence course in all lines of insurance except life and annuities (Dice Link); or

  • Completed at least six months’ experience in responsible insurance duties as a full-time employee (of an insurer, general lines agent or agency, etc.) in all lines except life and annuities (Qualification and Verification Form Link); or

  • Successfully completed at least 6 semester hours of credit or its equivalent in property and casualty courses from an accredited college or university (an official transcript required); or

  • Be fingerprinted on cards provided by the Florida Department of Financial Services.  Two fingerprint cards are mailed to the applicant.

 Exemptions for State Examination

  • A letter of clearance indicating the licensee held a property and casualty license for at least one (1) year in his/her home state and applying for a license within (90) days of becoming a resident of the State of Florida; or 

  • An original letter from one of the following institutions awarding one of the following designations:

American Institute for Property and Liability Underwriters  - Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriters (CPCU) Insurance

Institute of America - Accredited Advisor in Insurance (AAI)

Society of Certified Insurance Counselors - Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC)

Independent Insurance Agents of America - Accredited Customer Service Representative (ACSR)

National Association of Professional Insurance Agents - Certified Professional Service Representative (CPSR)

Society of Certified Insurance Service Representatives - Certified Insurance Service Representative (CISR)

Florida Association of Insurance Agents - Certified Customer Service Representative (CCSR)          

Accredited Postsecondary Institute in this State -  Registered Customer Service Representative (RCSR)

Professional Career Institute - Professional Customer Service Representative (PCSR)

 

Special Notes

n                  Cannot be employed by more than one general lines agent or agency at any given time and must be housed in the office of the agent or agency.

n                  May only transact the kinds of insurance his/her appointing agent or agency is authorized to write.

n                  All business transacted by the customer representative must be in the name of the agent or agency.

n                  Applicant cannot be licensed as a general lines agent, service representative, public adjuster or managing general lines agent while holding this type and class of license.

n                  Cannot engage in transacting insurance outside of the office of his/her agent or agency.

n                  Must be a salaried employee.   Compensation shall not include commissions and shall not be primarily based on the production of applications, insurance, or premiums.

Special Note

  • The department shall not, however issue any license and appointment to any individual who does not, at the time of issuance and throughout the existence of the Florida license, hold a license as agent or broker issued by his or her home state; nor to any individual who is employed by any insurer as a service representative or who is a managing general agent in any state whether or not also licensed in another state as an agent or broker.
