RESIDENT GENERAL LINES INSURANCE AGENT

                        TYPE AND CLASSES:

Florida Statutes 626.015 defines a “General Lines Agent” as an agent transacting any one or more of the following kinds of insurance: property, casualty, surety, health and marine and miscellaneous lines.

Florida Statutes 624.604 defines  “PROPERTY INSURANCE” as insurance on real or personal property of every kind and of every interest therein, whether on land, water, or in the air, against loss or damage from any and all hazard or cause. 

Florida Statutes 624.605 defines “CASUALTY INSURANCE” as insurance against vehicle, liability, workers’ compensation and employer’s liability, burglary and theft, personal property floater, glass, boiler and machinery, leakage and fire extinguish equipment, credit, credit property insurance, malpractice, animal, elevator, entertainments and miscellaneous lines. 

    Application Qualifications:

  • Complete an online application for License and submit appropriate fees.   Apply for license

  • Be a natural person at least 18 years of age.

  • Be a resident of the state of Florida.

  • Be a United States citizen or legal alien who possesses a work authorization from the United States Immigration and Naturalization Services.

  • Be fingerprinted at one of the Department's fingerprint sites.  (Link directly to locations and additional information)

  • If licensed in another state within three years, provide a Letter of Clearance.

    State Examination Qualifications (Must be completed within four years of application date):

  • Having taught an approved classroom courses in property and casualty insurance at a school, college, or extension division or successfully completed a 200 hour approved insurance course in all lines of property and casualty insurance. (Find Course); or

  • Successfully completed a correspondence course in all lines of property and casualty insurance approved by the Department and having at least six months of responsible insurance duties as a full-time bona fide employee (of an insurer, general lines agent or agency, etc.) in all lines of property and Casualty insurance (Find Course) and (Qualification and Verification Form Link); or

  • Completed at least one year in responsible insurance duties as a full-time bona fide employee in all lines (the areas of property, casualty, surety, health, and marine) of property and casualty insurance (Qualification and Verification Form Link); or

  • Completed at least one (1) year of responsible insurance duties as a licensed and appointed customer representative or limited customer representative and complete a 40 hour classroom course approved by the Department in the areas of property, casualty, surety, marine and health insurance (Find Course); or

  • Completed at least one (1) year of responsible insurance duties as a licensed and appointed service representative and complete a 80 hour classroom course approved by the Department in the areas of property, casualty, surety, marine and health insurance (Find Course); or

  • Successfully completed at least 15 semester hours of credit or its equivalent in property and casualty courses form an accredited college or university (an official transcript required); or

    Exemptions for State Examination

  • A letter of clearance indicating the licensee held a property and casualty license for at least one (1) year in his/her home state and applying for a license within 90 days of becoming a resident of the State of Florida; or

  • An original letter from the American Institute for Property and Liability Underwriters certifying the licensee was awarded the Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriters (CPCU) designation and has been engaged in business the last 4 years.
     

    Special Note

  • The department shall not, however issue any license and appointment to any individual who does not, at the time of issuance and throughout the existence of the Florida license, hold a license as agent or broker issued by his or her home state; nor to any individual who is employed by any insurer as a service representative or who is a managing general agent in any state whether or not also licensed in another state as an agent or broker.
